Marketing mayhem, how do I get started with Marketing!
Marketing… Is one of the most important parts of a business and one of the most costly.
However if done right it is the difference between success and failure, or you working 100 hours a week because you can’t afford to employ others!
You are Selling/marketing all the time, whether you believe me or not!
Answering the phone, handing a business card out, making a sale, contacting a customer whether by email, phone or letter.
Every Interaction with a customer is marketing and marketing has been called a salesmen in print. So whatever you do you are creating a positive or negative impression of yourself and ofcourse your business.
I would like to give you my view and thoughts on sales and marketing.
As I See It marketing is Customer Service, because the more you connect with people the better your chances are of getting a new client and I call marketing customer service, because if you don’t serve or attend to your clients your competition will.
So serve your customers properly and your business will eventually beable to give you freedom!
Getting back to Customer Service or should I say Marketing.
Marketing should most definately be defined as a Customer Service Campaign. This will instantly change the way you look at it.
Customer Service Campaign…
This means , yes you guessed it. You need to treat and gather long lasting friendships that you can support with your products or service. Just like a politician campaigns and shakes hands and is constantly out there ready to be shot done by his competition if he slips up.
I want you to write down now “how can I best serve my customers by starting a campaign ” now on another sheet write” what am I doing that pisses my customers off and what can I do to change it right now”
HYPNOSIS part or 3rd person perspective(or just ask a mate for an Honest No BS opinion about your business, from the front door to the back door. give him slack and keep saying is that it and take notes then ask him how you could dramatically improve things. remember he is only one person you should do this by paying customers to tell you)
Close your eyes after you have read the following.
Imagine your best customer every detail eyes clothes posture, how they talk and breath. now imagine stepping into their body and seeing your business as they do.
what do they see, feel and say to them selves. are they telling themselves “why am I here again” or “my god has he not cleaned the floor again” or are they looking around in distaste and feeling ill having to deal with you again.
write everything they see down and then set about dealing with these problems!
When I start dealing with a new business that operates a service or product that is bought over and over again. I implement a customer feedback inititive and open communication channels eg facebook twitter or emailing.
This can be very good cost effective strategies for informing customers of events, offers and changes to your product or service and is also an excellent stealth tool that goes blow your competitions radar. So you can test lots of things before your competition knows what has hit them!

…lately I’m hearing a lot about Stress, fatigue and a void!
Stress, fatigue and a void that consumes to the core.
I don’t deal in these subjects even though I’ve studied it for the last 20 years via psychology and linguistics.
As I see it. the problems are based on honesty. You are not being honest with yourself or others,, maybe you continue to add responsibility to your shoulders or as I put it adding monkeys that turn into gorillas.
So do 2 things
1 Pass all monkeys back if you are not in a position to deal with them or write down, when you can by using an implementation date in a diary(most phones have an alert, so you won’t miss it) AND LET EVERYONE KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING SO THEY HAVE A CHOICE AND DATE TOO!
2 figure out what would make you happy TODAY! and what are you prepared to delay lets say 1,2,3,5, 10 0r even 20 years.
3, get yourself help by experts, a nutritionist, mentor/life coach and maybe a personal trainer and a massage therapist…
There is a lot of power in given yourself something back, instead of giving everything to your business or partner all the time. I call it Quality ME time!

Why and how do these sites add to our lifes. How can we use them. Are they fullfilling any needs we have.
Well maybe they are maybe the need to be connected, because most other things in our society actually drives us apart 24 hour shopping, everything open on a sunday. Over comercialising us has almost destroyed us!
So that is why I think these social interaction sites work they allow us to say what we like, how we feel. to act like kids by connecting and talking about the good old times…

How to design an advertisement (rough guide)
Important basics you should know about Marketing Your Business
Be creative, action oriented and study marketing.
The main premise in marketing, as I see It.(as i see it also the title of a great book by J Paul Getty).
after studying the basics of layout and this is pretty much standard in all methods of ads, is just to draw a great big Z on the page ( fig 1)and it stands for the entry and exit of the EYE or Reader over your advert Entry should have a title/killer header, then a sub header that tells more about what you're about to tell the potential reader the body of the Z is content and the end/bottom of the Z is the route for them to take action (your details or your call to action,telephone) this is a really simplistic view! But the real core and fundamental of marketing is to TEST TEST TEST and Test some more . and this basically means test different headings,sub headings images, layout and your call to action(but not all at the same time).

One other important thing with Marketing is it shouldn’t be aimed at yourself, but your market and shouldn't include your vanity in it! So please unless you're a celeb on the A list that everyone knows and loves leave your Name and business name off the top and place at the bottom of the page. out ofthe way. You see All marketing should be aimed directly at your target audience with something that appeals to them and that will probably not be your name but what you can do for them in a better or bigger way than your competition. check out Eben Pagan on Youtube for more Information on pinpointing customers and creating a customer avatar!

Geographical numbers.
Geographic Numbers are numbers that are town specific like
- Colchester(01206)
- Chelmsford(01473)
- Ipswich(01473)
- Southend(01702)
- Witham(01376)
- London(0208)
They can be used to make your company look more local. So you gain more via being the local man for the job!
You can rent these numbers from about £2-£3 per month or you can buy for life from £28.75…
Mistakes can be made with these by buying and displaying to many in an ad. It is distracting and confusing. Ad names to make it more realistic!
Niche marketing
Norm v Internet. Normally you just advertise your business as a whole in the Yellow pages. keeps it all together but can be non specific and challenging for people who want to find a certain trade. Also the confidence of the potential client is shattered as everyone knows the term “Jack of all trades, master of non” what are you. be more specific and get more quatlity business…
On the internet it is very easy to try and over do this “jack of all trades” mentality.
- Options
- Squeeze pages
- Mini sites
- Niche sites
- Blogging
You can easily and cheaply seperate each trade, look like a master craftsman and charge more as a specialist!
Pagentation tips
(placement of ads on a page)
When designing your Yellow page ads check through the directory listings, check where you prefer to come in the listings and take a note of the letter of the alphabet where you would sit and build this into your design and tell the ad rep what it’s there for..
eg aaaaaa will get you near the front depending on the size of your ad and space available!
Pagentation has no guarantees and is very annoying subject, because can mean success or failure of a small advertiser!
Multi-ads
Here is a subject close to my heart, when placing ads and bearing in mind pangentation restrictions. This can be one of the best ideas you could use!
when designing your ads maybe place more specific ads than a large general ad. More bites of the apple. absolute best would be to add to your existing ad with some other niched or specific adverts…
Also beware of pagentation. you don’t want them on the same page bundled together. Spread them out, people don’t always go to the front of the section first…
Testimonials
Marketing with out legimate 100% bonofide testimonials is a new client for your nemesis-competition. so get some testimonials now, if no one will give one to you GIVE UP. everyone has pleased a customer. why should you be any different…
DON’T Fake it, we don’t like fakers do we fellows!
A- Plan/Goal helps
Goals and plans are essential for any business! if you haven’t got one how do you know when enoughs enough…
Start by writing down the costs of your business then minus this by T/O.
This will give you a figure which should be your current wages. If you want more. then set this as your new goal. If what you currently are doing marketing wise won’t cut it talk to your yellow page rep for an ad strategy or talk to me.

Living life on purpose…

I’ve just finished Andre Agassi’s autobiography ‘Open’. What a fascinating, interesting and inspiring read. Agassi gives a frank account of his life in tennis from his earliest memories of having his father place a tennis racket in his hands as a very small child, to eventually finding his purpose for playing. Agassi takes the reader on his journey of self discovery.
How can someone be good at something they hate?
‘I hate tennis’ – privately throughout his competitive career Agassi hated the game he excelled at, but publicly he deceived us all and told us what he thought we wanted to hear.
Only in the twilight of his competitive career did he start to find his true purpose, a real reason for playing and winning.
As I read this book I was once again reminded how important being purposeful is in affecting your drive, motivation and ultimate success.
So my questions to you are:
Do you know your purpose?
Are you living life on purpose?
Perhaps it’s time you did…

Reflect for success

‘Tis the season of goodwill, good cheer and over indulgence!
If however, we’re wise men and women it is also a great time for reflection; an opportunity to look back on 2009 and learn some lessons from our actions and possibly also our inactions!
Here are Leonard’s 11 questions to prepare you for 2010. Take a little time to consider your responses; you may wish to focus on one particular area of your life e.g. your business, or take a helicopter view of the whole picture.
Above all, be honest with yourself and decide how you will use this information to make a positive start in the New Year.
1. What action have I taken that I’m most proud of this year?
2. What was the one thing I didn’t do that I wish I had?

Are you making things happen yet?

There are 3 types of people in life
Those that make things happen
Those that watch things happen
And those that wonder what happened!
Which are you?
I have to admit I’ve been every type – sometimes all in one day!
So do people have a natural propensity to take action, while others prefer to observe proceedings, or even at times find themselves so immersed in the past or future that they completely miss what’s going on around them now?
And…
If like me you’re likely to have been all 3 at sometime what factors would influence your action or inaction?
Here are some factors to consider:
- Personal Experience
- Belief systems
- Values
- Experience of others
- Culture
- Religion
- Peer pressure
- Environment
- Friends and family
- Education
- Media pressure
- Perceived competence
- Desire
I’m sure some if not all of the above contribute, however I want to focus on what I believe is one of the key drivers and that’s…
DESIRE – how much do you really want to make things happen?
Whether your goal is to:
Do something e.g. run a marathon
Be someone or something e.g. a successful author
Have something e.g. a shiny red sports car
Or even Go somewhere e.g. a cruise around the world
You’re more likely to be successful if you are truly committed to it and absolutely passionate about it. Or as Brian Mayne says it’s doing the “thing that makes your heart sing”.
Remember the old adage “where there’s a will there’s a way” well there’s certainly something in that!
Consider people that have apparently succeeded against all odds. Who would have believed we’d see a black president in the White House?
“My parents shared not only an improbable love; they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation. They would give me an African name, Barack, or blessed, believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success. They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren’t rich, because in a generous America you don’t have to be rich to achieve your potential.”

They have a goal; maybe a pretty audacious one, but more importantly they have a burning desire to achieve it. Their WHY is strong enough so even when the going gets tough they find extra reserves within themselves and find a way to make things happen.
This may mean reviewing their goal, adjusting their course, or even starting all over again. In fact they’ll do whatever it takes to reach their outcome, because their reasons are so powerful that it’s not a matter of ‘maybe’ or even ‘must’; it’s a very definite ‘WILL’!
Woulda, shoulda, coulda just doesn’t work here. As Tony Robbins says there are plenty of people out there who “should all over themselves!”
Now consider those occasions when you’ve achieved most…
What was the difference that made the difference?
Tapping into that place; that state; that desire – the one where you’re at your most resourceful. Your positivity creates clarity, discovers options and provides the energy to take action.
Well what are you waiting for?

Do you know where you’re going?

I came upon this excerpt from Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland the other day and thought how perfect a metaphor it is for the lack of direction in many small businesses. I have similar conversations with business owner/managers; like Alice they are sometimes not really clear about what they want to achieve or where they’re taking their company.
As a coach it’s not up to me to dictate their direction, especially as invariably they already have the answers and just aren’t asking themselves the right questions. That’s where I come in; my job is to help them find clarity of purpose and identify priorities by asking the right questions and providing the appropriate tools to ensure the actions they take are as effective as possible and justly rewarded.
So do you have a vision and goals for your business and if you do, are you on track? It’s easy to blame the current economic climate for a downturn in profits, but are you working smarter, not just harder and taking advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, even in a recession?
Taking time to re-assess your priorities and evaluate the reasons for your current situation helps to provide perspective and get you back on track.
After all, people who aim at nothing seldom miss the target!

Mr Kipling makes exceedingly good Blogs…

I refer of course not to the cake maker, but the one who wrote The Jungle Book (amongst other things) Mr Rudyard Kipling.
You may be thinking what on earth could he have possibly had to do with Bloging? Well I think his quote below suggests a pretty good formula for anyone considering writing an effective Blog.
“I keep six honest serving men, (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When, And How and Where and Who.”
(Ack: Rudyard Kipling, from ‘Just So Stories’, 1902.)
• Why write a Blog (what’s its purpose, or my outcome)? Explain the reasons your audience should be interested. Sell the benefits and get them tuned into WIIFM (What’s in it for me?)
• Who is your audience or your target market? Give brief details about yourself and how you can be contacted.
• Where will you post it? Where can your audience get more information or sign up for more details; this may be a link to your website or your email address.
• What do you want to tell them (content)? Consider what your audience wants to know.l
• How are you going to do get your information across? Tell them what action they need to take now.
• When am I going to do this?
Try using this simple formula to build your Blog.

Marketing and gaining an interest!
Today Wow Glee club, absolutely awesome. there were 2 american football teams, squaring off in battle mode. Then Suddenly one side started dancing as if they were the cheer leaders. it was fantastic, imagine a football squad dancing too Beyonce – Single Ladies.
I absolutely loved it, what could you apply this too. How can you be different and gain an advantage over others, it doesn’t have to be outrages you can use subtle!
So be outrages, be subtle, be YOU above all. Use all you are to become all you can be!

Wow Last Night was amazing, it snowed heavily and froze the roads.
It was also the first Get Me Googled Seminar and it was held in Cheltenham, Glouscestershire!
Yes a Wopping 160 miles away from my home town in Colchester Essex. I drove through the night to make it back at 20 mph for the last 90 miles and would you believe it, 200 meters from my front door the car got stuck in ice and wouldn’t move so had to leave it over night.
The Seminar was a success, everybody was able to get listed on google, twitter, wordpress & profileomat. believe me it was amazing as these ladies had no real geeky mentality. but now all profiecient marketers!
So there are absolutely no excuses for any of you reading this and not promoting yourself online either…
